ΛΥΣΙΛEΩΣ (sic!) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, an exceptional legend error
Lot 242
KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. AE (Bronze, 23 mm, 8.14 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in western Asia Minor. Male head to right, wearing Phrygian helmet. Rev. ΛΥΣΙΛEΩΣ (sic!) - ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ Trophy left. HGC 3.2, 1755. SNG Copenhagen 1164-7. A highly interesting piece with a most curious reverse legend error. Minor flan faults, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Bavarian Collection, formed in the early 2000s.

This highly interesting piece comes with a most curious legend error on the reverse, as the artist apparently confused name and title and hence spelled the king's name as ΛΥΣΙΛEΩΣ instead of ΛΥΣΙMAXOY in error!
